Yup, I threw out the partial one I had. I decided I hadn’t the foggiest idea whether I should knit or purl and I didn’t really like the yarn anyway. lol. So I bought some new yarn (cotton or cotton blend this time, instead of acrylic. I don’t like wool). I’ll have to swatch those out to get the correct gauge, but I think I’ll like the yarn better. I’m hoping at any rate. :P

Gah! I put down my knitting without making sure I had just finished my knit row. So then I wasn’t sure which I was supposed to be doing. So I did a couple rows, but that didn’t look right. So I pulled those out and thought I tried the other stitch. Only that looked just as bad if not worse. I think I’ve done this three times so far. Gah!!! I’ve only made it an inch into the stockinette plus probably 12 rows of ribbing. I could just kill the project now and start over.
I’m very tempted. I don’t care for the yarn I snatched from Mom’s stash. It’s an awful polyester that’s not soft and cozy at all. I’d really rather it was in a cotton or cotton blend. So I may just pull out another ball of yarn and start over. :P At least now I know how to do the stitches!

Yup, I got bored with the poncho. Oh I have full intentions of finishing it. It’s just I really really want arm warmers. It’s why I wanted to learn how to knit.
So, confident enough in my abilities, I set out to teach myself how to purl. I know, so so challenging. And then how to swap from knit to purl as well as stockinette stitch.
It’s going pretty well so far. I’ve made it through the ribbed portion and into the stockinette stitch. Yay! So far so good!

More progress! Can’t say that there’s anything interesting to report. I’ve still got 50 stitches on the needles (yay!) and my sides are fairly even. My mom was very impressed with that. I’m now 16in long. I only get to work on it every so often as I’ve 80-million other things to do too (roughly). I think I’m at about 85 rows…(not that row count matters as you knit to a certain length…)

Wow. I hadn’t realized I was even that far! Whoot!

Just thought I’d pop in for an update: approximately one week later and I’m about 8in along. I had one small problem with a dropped stitch (?) that created a hole…Mom fixed it for me with a crochet hook. It was magic. ;) Eventually I’ll learn how to fix those…I opted not to frog back 3-4 rows because a) I don’t really know how b) I didn’t want to get that frustrated c) it’s my first project ever and d) it’s just a poncho!
I’ve gotten much better about keeping my stitches loose. Go me! I don’t think I’ve had a problem with adding or subtracting stitches…maybe that incident with the hole. lol. I’m pretty proud of my progress!

Well, I’ve started. And become quickly addicted.
I’m about 8 rows in. I’ve only added two stitches which I quickly fixed (Mom reminded me to count my stitches every so often). Oh, wait, that was a few rows back. I think I added another one (which I kinda thought I was at one point…but figured I’d check at the end). Ah well. Not terrible for a beginner. And as it’s just a poncho and in somewhat furry yarn, I’m not too concerned.
It’s a simple garter stitch (so all you do is knit, knit, knit) and ends up just as a rectangle, so it’s dirt simple for a beginner like me. :)
I’m so not keeping track of time. As I’m absolutely doing it in front of the TV, I haven’t a clue. LOL. A couple hours by now. :P Sad, yes. But I’m still learning! The biggest thing I need to work on is keeping my stitches loose. I have the distinct tendancy (as I’m sure many beginners do) of locking my stitches too tight, so it’s difficult to knit. :P I’m getting better, though.
Oh and I discovered large kidney-shaped earrings (that I had in my jewelry-making stash from who-knows-how-long-ago) make excellent stitch markers/counters.
% complete: 2in of 46-50in…so about 4% complete. Let’s up that to 5% ’cause I did actually swatch the thing.
